Most sportives and gran fondos are 100km or more in length and include a lot of climbing, so these are the component parts you need to work on in your training. Many of these sessions feature long periods working up near your functional threshold power (FTP), or the hardest you can work in an hour. It also helps to work on your climbing technique if you can find some good hills near you.
Tempo and sweetspot intervals in a long ride will get your legs used to working hard for long periods, but even a tough 20 minutes on the indoor trainer can yield big benefits if done regularly.
